Setting Up Your Notion Integration

This guide covers creating a Notion integration and connecting it to your database. You can use our official template (Standard mode) or your own database (Custom mode).

Which mode should I choose?

Standard Mode — Use our pre-built Notion template. Everything works out of the box. Best for most users.

Custom Mode — Use your own Notion database with whatever properties you already have. We'll detect your schema and let you map fields. Best if you already have a Notion workflow you like.

You can choose your mode on the Configuration page after completing this guide.

Standard Mode: Using Our Template

Step 1: Duplicate the Notion Template

First, open our official Notion To-Do List Template. Click the "Duplicate" icon in the top-right corner to copy the template into your own Notion workspace.

Step 2: Create a New Notion Integration

Navigate to the My Integrations page on Notion's website and click the "+ New integration" button.

  • Name: Give it a memorable name like "Canvas2Notion Sync".
  • Associated workspace: Ensure this is the workspace where you just duplicated the template.
  • Type: Leave the type as "Internal".

Click "Submit" to create the integration.

Step 3: Copy Your Integration Secret (API Key)

On the next screen, you will see your integration's secrets. Under the "Secrets" tab, find the "Internal Integration Token". Click "Show" and then "Copy" this token. This is your Notion API key.

Step 4: Connect the Integration to Your Database Page

Go back to the Notion page you duplicated in Step 1. Click the three-dots menu (•••) in the top-right corner, scroll down to "+ Add connections", and search for the "Canvas2Notion Sync" integration you just created. Select it from the list and click "Confirm" to grant it access.

Step 5: Find and Copy Your Database ID

With the duplicated Notion page still open, click the "Share" button in the top-right corner and then click the "Copy link" button. Paste this link into a text editor.

The URL will look something like this: https://www.notion.so/your-workspace/a1b2c3d4e5f67890g1h2i3j4k5l6m7n8?v=...

The long string of letters and numbers between your workspace name and the question mark is your Database ID. Copy this value.

Step 6: Paste Credentials & Choose Your Mode

Go to your Canvas2Notion Configuration Page and paste the Internal Integration Token into the "Notion API Key" field, and the Database ID into the "Notion Database ID" field.

If you're using Standard mode with our template, you're all set — just save and your sync will start on the next cycle!

Custom Mode: Using Your Own Database

Already have a Notion database you love? Custom mode lets you keep your existing setup and map your own properties to Canvas fields.

Step 1: Prepare Your Notion Database

You can use any Notion database you like. The only requirement is that it has at least one Title property (which every Notion database has by default). Beyond that, you can use whatever property names and types you want.

Here are some helpful property types to consider having:

  • Title — For the assignment name (required).
  • Status or Select — For tracking completion (e.g., "Not started", "Done").
  • Date — For assignment due dates.
  • Multi-select or Select — For grouping by class/course name.
  • Number — Used internally to track Canvas assignment IDs (auto-created if not mapped).
  • URL or Rich text — For linking back to the assignment in Canvas.

Step 2: Create & Connect the Integration

Follow the same steps as Standard mode above (Steps 2–5): create a Notion integration, connect it to your database, and grab the Database ID. The process is identical.

Step 3: Configure Custom Mode

  1. On the Configuration page, paste your API key and Database ID, then save.
  2. Under Sync Mode, select Custom.
  3. Click the "Detect Properties" button. We'll read your database schema and populate the mapping dropdowns with compatible properties.
  4. Map at least the Title field (required). All other fields are optional — unmapped fields will simply be skipped during sync.
  5. Click Save Configuration.

💡 Tips

  • If you don't map a Canvas ID property, one will be auto-created as a hidden Number column in your database. This is needed to track which assignments have already been synced.
  • You can switch between Standard and Custom mode at any time on the config page. Your existing synced pages won't be deleted.
  • If you add new properties to your database later, just click "Detect Properties" again to refresh the list.

Once you save your custom mapping, you'll be ready to sync!
