Connecting Your Canvas Account

Connect with Canvas provides full assignment and submission-status sync when your school has enabled Canvas2Notion. Calendar Feed remains the no-admin fallback.

Recommended: Connect with Canvas

  1. Choose Connect with Canvas in Canvas2Notion.
  2. Enter the full Canvas URL you normally use, such as https://school.instructure.com.
  3. Continue to Canvas, sign in through your school's normal login or SSO page, and approve the requested read access.

Canvas2Notion requests read-only access to your active courses and their assignments. This includes your assignment submission state, so Notion statuses can stay current. Your Canvas password and school SSO credentials are entered only on Canvas and are never sent to Canvas2Notion.

Don't see this option, or Canvas says the app is not enabled? Your school's Canvas root administrator must enable the Canvas2Notion Developer Key. Use Calendar Feed until the institution enables it.

No-admin fallback: Calendar Feed

  1. Log in to Canvas and open Calendar from the main navigation.
  2. Click Calendar Feed in the calendar sidebar.
  3. Copy the private .ics link shown by Canvas.
  4. Choose Calendar Feed in Canvas2Notion and paste the link.

Keep this URL private. Anyone with the link can read the calendar. Canvas2Notion encrypts it before storage.

Calendar Feed syncs dated assignments and Canvas calendar events, including due-date changes. It does not include submission status or undated assignments.

Legacy/testing: Canvas API Token

Use these steps only for an existing connection or testing if your school allows personal access-token generation. Canvas requires multi-user applications to use OAuth.

Step 1: Find Your Canvas URL

If you don't already know your Canvas URL, log in to your institution's Canvas portal through your normal method. Once you are on your dashboard, copy the URL directly from your browser's address bar.

The URL should look something like this: https://your-institution.instructure.com. Please paste the URL, including the "https://" part, into the configuration page. You can check the formatting below to see the URL that you should enter.

Step 2: Navigate to Your Account Settings

Once you are logged into Canvas, click on the "Account" link in the main sidebar menu on the left, then click "Settings" from the menu that appears.

Step 3: Generate a New Access Token

On the settings page, scroll down until you find the section titled "Approved Integrations". Click the "+ New Access Token" button.

Step 4: Configure the Token

A pop-up window will appear with several fields:

  • Purpose: Enter a descriptive name you'll remember, like "Canvas2Notion Sync".
  • Expires (Optional): It is highly recommended that you leave this field blank to prevent your sync from unexpectedly stopping.

Once you've filled in the purpose, click the blue "Generate Token" button.

Step 5: Copy Your New Token

After generating, Canvas will display your new token. This is the only time you will ever see the full token.

Click the copy icon next to the key and paste it directly into the "Canvas API Key" field on your Canvas2Notion configuration page. The key will be long and look similar to this censored example: 12258~FD6z...8LUKE
